F. Scott Fitzgerald said “the test of a first-rate intelligence is the ability to hold two opposing ideas in mind at the same time and still retain the ability to function.” Humans have long pondered this concept as evidenced by the ancient Yin Yang symbol depicting duality. German philosopher G.W.F. Hegel used a dialectical method of argument whereby he explored the contradictory process between opposing sides of a topic. As with light, ideas vary across a spectrum where the continuum of values unifies the polar extremes. The mental ability to simultaneously divide and combine concepts requires a nimble intellect.
